What Size Storage Space Does Your RV or Boat Need?

Storage Tips · Birch Bay

Finding the right size is a five-minute job. Measure correctly, add a little room to maneuver, and you get the right fit at the right price.

Open storage is sold by length, so a good measurement saves you money and headaches. Here is how to get it right.

Quick answer

Measure your RV bumper to bumper including any racks or overhangs, and measure a boat by its full length on the trailer including the tongue and motor, then add a few feet for easy maneuvering. Facilities price by these length tiers, so an accurate measurement gets you the right fit and price.

Why length drives fit and price

The right measurement matters twice: it makes sure your rig fits comfortably, and it makes sure you are not paying for space you do not need. A few minutes with a tape measure settles both.

How to measure

Measure an RV correctly

Measure the true footprint from bumper to bumper, and include bike racks, ladders, spare tires, and any overhang. The brochure length often understates what the rig actually occupies in a space.

Measure a boat on its trailer

For a boat, measure the entire length as it sits on the trailer, from the tip of the tongue to the outboard or swim platform at the stern. That full number is what needs to fit.

Leave room to maneuver

Add a few feet beyond your measured length. A little extra makes backing in and pulling out easy, protects your rig from tight corners, and saves you stress on every visit.

Open or covered for your size

Once you know your length, choose open storage for value and easy access, or covered for added weather protection. Either way, the right tier keeps the price fair.

Your measuring checklist

  • RV measured bumper to bumper, including racks and overhangs
  • Boat measured on the trailer, including tongue and motor
  • A few feet added for easy maneuvering
  • Open or covered decided for how you use the rig
